This will never allow the.DSStore file to sneak in your git. But, if it's already there, write in your terminal: find.name.DSStore -print0 xargs -0 git rm -f -ignore-unmatch then commit and push the changes to remove the.DSStore from your remote repo: git commit -m 'Remove.DSStore from everywhere' git push origin master. Permute 3 4 4 equals. Google led me 2 places. One was control panel folder options. It was not there. Another was gpedit.msc which my IT knuckleheads have locked me out. So for me its not there either. Still, I guess I'd take a registry or obscure config file change over Apple's approach to forcing.dsstore down our throats.
There are several 'work-arounds'. I have not tried these. Maybe I could be motivated. I have Windows XP in a virtual machine.
The fastest and simplest way is to add.DSStore and.Rhistory to your global gitignore file. Here is how to do it, in a nutshell: open or create (if doesn't exist yet) /.gitignoreglobal and add.DSStore and.Rhistory on two new lines. If your repository already includes any unwanted files, use git rm to get rid of them.

As you would have to disable writing of hidden files on every mac that could connect to your share, a better option would be to stop this at the share and not on the clients.

Now no Mac clients can save any files with those patterns to your share.
[ At one time, Apple used the open source version of samba. So, I assume the veto option was present. Not sure what Apple has done in the latest version. ]
Summary of possibilities. At one time, there was a command line to turn off some or all of these hidden files. Zoc terminal 7 09 2 download free. Didn't work in Mavericks. Don't know if it was restored in Yosemite.
Not sure why these files would interfere with backup. There files like any other hidden file.
